What it is
The muscles between the base of your skull and your shoulder blades hold up your head all day. Long hours at a screen, carrying heavy bags, stress and sleeping in an awkward position can leave them tight and sore.
It often feels like a knot that won't let go or a neck that won't turn all the way. The pain can spread into the shoulder and bring on headaches.
Shoulder pain can also come from the joint itself, such as a stiff or frozen shoulder or irritated rotator cuff tendons.
How TECAR helps
- 1
The flat CET head warms the large muscles across the upper back and the sides of the neck, so tight spots soften. The metal RET head reaches the shoulder joint and the tendons around it.
- 2
Many patients can turn their head further or raise their arm higher by the end of a session. Your practitioner will usually give you stretches to do at home so the gain lasts.
What to expect
- Session length
- 15 to 25 minutes
- How often
- Once or twice a week
- What you'll feel
- Gentle warmth spreading across the upper back and into the shoulder
- Often paired with
- Massage, acupuncture or an adjustment
How many sessions
Most people have 4 to 8 sessions. A stiff or frozen shoulder can take 10 or more.

One patient's story
“Every tax season I get a knot between my shoulder blades from sitting at the computer. After five sessions I could turn my head both ways again.”
