Pain that runs from the lower back or buttock down the leg, sometimes with tingling or numbness.

What it is
The sciatic nerve runs from your lower back, through the buttock and down the back of each leg. When something presses on it, such as a bulging disc or a tight muscle deep in the buttock, pain can shoot down the leg.
People describe a burning or electric pain, a deep ache in the buttock, or tingling in the foot. Sitting and driving often make it worse.
See a doctor straight away if your leg feels weak, you have numbness around the groin, or you have trouble controlling your bladder or bowels.
How TECAR helps
- 1
TECAR warms the muscles of the lower back and buttock, including the piriformis, a small muscle that can squeeze the nerve when it's tight. Looser muscle and better blood flow can ease the pressure and the pain.
- 2
Your practitioner will treat the lower back as well as the leg, and will usually add stretches and exercises.

One patient's story
“I drive a truck for a living, and the pain down my left leg made every trip hard. After eight sessions I can do a full day in the cab without pulling over every hour to stretch.”
