What it is
Most sports injuries are strains, where a muscle is stretched or torn, or sprains, where a ligament is. Tendon pain from doing too much too soon is also common. Hamstrings, calves, groins, ankles and shoulders are the usual places.
You might feel a sudden pull during a sprint, roll an ankle on a trail, or notice an ache that gets worse each time you train.
How TECAR helps
- 1
Dr. Ouyang has treated sports injuries for more than 25 years. For a fresh injury, the practitioner uses a low setting that doesn't heat the tissue, to help with swelling and bruising.
- 2
As the injury heals, they turn up the warmth. This brings more blood to the area and loosens the stiff scar tissue that forms during repair.
- 3
Because the muscle feels looser afterwards, many athletes find their rehab exercises easier to do properly.
What to expect
- Session length
- 15 to 30 minutes
- How often
- 2 or 3 times a week while you heal
- What you'll feel
- Little or no heat for a fresh injury, and deeper warmth as it heals
- Often paired with
- Rehab exercises and a plan for returning to sport
How many sessions
A fresh strain often needs 4 to 6 sessions. Older injuries that keep coming back may need 8 to 12.

One patient's story
“I pulled my hamstring six weeks before a marathon. My physical therapist added TECAR to my rehab, and I ran the race without pain.”
I pulled my right hamstring on a speed workout in January, six weeks before a marathon I'd been training for since the fall. By the next morning I couldn't walk down the stairs normally.
